Just as oil and water don't mix, so do springs and deserts. But Cresent Lake is an exception. About 6 kilometers south of Dunhuang city, and surrounded by the Echoing-Sand Mountain, Cresent Lake can be called a natural wonder in the Gobi Desert. The Crescent Lake, also known as Crescent Moon Lake stretches amost a handred meters long from south to north and twenty-five meters wide from east to west with the depth of five meters most. As the name suggests this beautiful natural spring is shaped like a crescent moon. Here you can enjoy not only the rare view where an oasis meets the desert, but also some fun sand adventures, such as riding camels, 'dune surfing' sand sliding. After climbing to the top of the dunes, from there you can't help but marvel at the dramatic view.
The Cresent Lake is always cool and clear, remaining unpolluted by the sand only feet away. The crescent moon lake is a lake that lies in the center of the desert. The width between north and south is only fifty-four meters. It is really a mini lake surrounded by sand. In the south bank of crescent moon lake a pavilion stands tall and erect. It has empress palace, dragon royal palace, Bodhisattva palace, god of medicine cave, scripture hall, thunder spirit table and so forth. They are surrounded by Mt. Mingsha(Echoing-Sand Mountain). Though the Crescent Moon Lake is located in the desert, it never dries up and survived from attacks by sandstorms among these sand dunes for thousands of years. Cresent Lake still glistens cear and still remains worth as the first spring in the desert and top travel destination in Dunhuang.
