Ancient Dunhuang City is located about 25 kilometers southwest of Dunhuang City, covering an area of 12, 700 square meters. It was originally designed for the setting of the historical film Dunhuang in 1987. The film was made in cooperation with Japan and the set reproduced part layout and construction of the famous scroll painting Qingming Shanghe Tu (The Outing at Bian River on Qingming Festival). This town fully represents the military importance of the western regions in the Tang (618-907) and Song Dynasties.
While entering the town, the complex gives one an impression that the clock gas turned backwards to the ancient times with the majestic ancient town in west regions appearance. This Square town has east, south and west gates, and five main streets, Gaochang, Dunhuang, Ganzhou, Xingqing and Bianliang Street which are criss crossed with each other inside the town. Various constructions win different characteristics of the Song Dynasty are scattered along the streets, temples, hockshops, warehouses, restaurants, housing arcades and dwelling houses etc.
This town has become the biggest set for shooting movies in northwest China, and more than 20 films and TV series have been produced here, besides the movie Dunhuang. As you entered the town, you will be surprised to see that some of the familiar scenes appeared in your favorite movies with military theme of ancient China.
