Gahai Lake located in Gahai village, Luqu County, Gannan Prefecture, about 36 km from Langmusi. Gahai Lake is surrounded by vast grassland which is the largest freshwater lake in Gannan. Every summer, many waterfowls such as black swan, egret and wild duck come and inhabit here.
Gahai Lake is an undeveloped virgin lake that has been unknown to people for thousands of years. It lies on the plateau between 3000 and 4000 meters above sea level, with average annual precipitation from 600 to 800mm. It’s a summer resort for travelers ,in summer temperature is between 12°C～20°C.
Gahai Lake collects water from surrounding hills and pours into Weihe River via Zhouqu. The surrounding areas have not been developed into farmland, and the conditions of the original pasture are still preserved. Visitors can not only see the reflection of clouds and peaks reflected in the mirror-like surface of the Gahai Lake, but also the sheep, herds and horses grazing on the grassland.
Gahai Lake and its surroundings have been turned into the Gahai Lake Migratory Bird Sanctuary Nature Reserve in 2007.
