Karakul means "Black Sea", which is located at the foot of Muztagh, the father of icebergs, and 191 kilometers from Kashgar. The China-Pakistan Highway passes by the lake. The lake is more than 3,600 meters above sea level, with an area of 10 square kilometers and a water depth of 30 meters. It is one of the few Plateau lakes in the world. Surrounded by the ice peaks and snow-capped mountains, especially Georgl, Georg Nine Peak and Mushtag Peak add more magical and beautiful colors to this lake.
In the calm days, the white peaks, green grassland and herds are reflected in the lake and are beautiful. Every summer and autumn season, this is the base camp for mountaineers and it is also a popular place for visitors. The scenery is picturesque and intoxicating. There is a tourist reception station beside the lake, they supply yurts, yachts, camels and horses for tourists.
On Subash grassland beside the lake, there are abundant plants and flocks of cattle and sheep. There are yurts and wooden houses available for tourists, dining, fresh meals including fresh vegetables, and a small rubber boat on the shore for people to swim freely in the lake and enjoy the great scenery of the Pamirs.
