Dunhuang museum was set up in 1979, housing more than 13,800 antiques, is one of the biggest museum in Gansu province. The new museum building was designed by Cui kai a master designer from China Architectural Design Institute. The museum covers an area of 7500 square meters and the construction started in 2006 and finished in 2009. The exhibition hall covers an area of 3000 sq meters.
More than 1000 antiques were displayed in 10 areas acorrding to the theme and timeline, they are: The ancient history and habitant, The great development in Han dynasty, The development in Wei and Jin dynasty, The prosperity during the Sui and Tang dynasty, The govern under the Uighurs and Tanguts, The histroy in Yuan and Ming dynasty, The development in The Qing dynasty, The discovery of the library cave, The rebellion aggainst Qing's farm tax and the silk road coins.
From outside, the museum has an appearance of the earth fort in the Han dynaty . Entering the museum, you first go through a cave styled passage, a reminiscent of the caves in Mogao Grottoes. With excellent presentation, the museum will give you an idea to the history and culture of dunhuang.
