Located 9 km east to Dunhuang city, around 16 km from Mogao grottoes. The center was open on August 1st 2014, which covers an area of 100,000 sq meters with total investment of more than 3,000,000 RMB.
The center was an important part of “Mogao grottoes protection and development project” and was approved by National Development and Reform Commission. It uses digital technology and multimedia tools to display the historical and cultural background of Dunhuang as well as the exquisite cave art of Mogao.
The opening up of the center bring visitors and visiting mode with revolutionary change. All visitors must make reservation online before they visit the caves. Visitors need to make their way to the center to watch 2 digital films of 20 minutes each, which can provide an opportunity to know the historical background of the Mogao grottoes and to have a virtual tour of the finest caves. Then take a shuttle bus to Mogao grottoes where professional cave guide will take you to the caves and give explanation. After the tour finished take shuttle bus again back to the center.
The two films shown alternately at the center are “Millennium Mogao” and “Dreamy Buddhist Palace”. “Mellennium Mogao” presents the historical background of 1600 years old grottoes on ultra high definition screen and give visitors an idea to the Silk Road, the spreading of Buddhism and the construction of the grottoes.
The other film called “Dream Buddha Palace” which use a huge dome screen of 500 sq meters and 18 meters long, to show splendid 3D caves and place visitors in a dream Buddha palace. Giving the audience a strong audio-visual shock and unparalleled artistic enjoyment!
