According to China Railway News, on December 18, with the official opening of the Subei to Mahai railway section, the entire Dunhuang Railway was opened for operation, forming the first ring railway network in Northwest China with the Lanqing Railway, Lanxin Railway and Qinghai-Tibet Railway.
The Dunhuang Railway traverse the Haixi Mongolian and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Qinghai Province and Jiuquan City in Gansu Province. It starts from Liugou Station of the Lanxin Railway in the north, passes through Dunhuang, Aksay, and Subei, crosses the Qilian Mountains and enters Qinghai Province, passing Mahai and Dachaidan and reach Yinma station of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, with a total length of 671 kilometers.
The Dunhuang Railway is a national railway I-level electrified single-track railway with double-track conditions reserved. The line design speed is 120 kilometers per hour, the traction mass is 4,000 tons, and the long-term transportation capacity will reach 36 million tons per year.
