Xinhua News Agency, Urumqi, March 8th - The 2025 China Xinjiang - Central Asia - Cuba International Wrestling Tournament commenced today in Turpan City, Xinjiang.
The tournament features five weight categories: 65kg, 74kg, 86kg, 97kg, and 125kg. A total of 73 athletes from six teams representing China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Cuba are competing, including several Olympic-level wrestlers. Among them is Arturo Silot Torres from Cuba, who competed in the 97kg category at the Paris Olympics last year, making his first trip to Xinjiang. Prior to the tournament, Torres trained with athletes from various countries for nearly a month at the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Weightlifting and Wrestling Training Center.
"I'm thrilled to train and compete with high-level athletes of different styles. It's been very beneficial for my improvement," Torres said. "I hope there will be more opportunities for us to learn from each other in the future."
In recent years, wrestling has seen rapid development in Xinjiang, producing outstanding athletes like Habira Awusayman and Tor Batu, with a growing pool of talent emerging from local sports schools and middle schools. "The purpose of hosting this tournament is to strengthen international sports cooperation and enhance athletes' ability to handle pressure in major competitions," said Adil Barat, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Weightlifting and Wrestling Training Center. "The Cuban athletes' techniques and understanding of the sport are world-class. This exchange opportunity will help our domestic athletes improve themselves."
