Located in the confluence area of the Qinba Mountains, the Loess Plateau and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Longnan has formed complex topography between high mountains and valleys and canyon basins. It’s a transition zone from the north subtropical to warm temperate zone, is the only Yangtze River basin and subtropical climate region in Gansu Province. Longnan has beautiful landscape and scenery, with pleasant climate and abundant natural resources. The forest coverage rate reaches 41.87% (2017). There are more than 20 kinds of rare animals, such as the national protected plants of Metasequoia, Taxus chinensis, Qujiang cedar, and Qinling fir, as well as more than 20 kinds of rare animals such as giant pandas, golden monkeys, taigas and golden pheasants. There are 3 national nature reserves and 6 provincial natural reserves, 4 National Forest Parks, 2 National Wetland Parks and Giant Panda National Park.
Longnan has a long history, was the birthplace of the Qin Dynasty, Qin and Qin cultures. Qin’s first cemetery is located in Dabaozi Mountain in Li County. Longnan is also the core area of the ancient Chinese people. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Longnan have established five local regimes. The Baima people of Wenxian County, a descendant of the Baima Yi ethnic group, are known as the "oldest tribes in East Asia." In addition, Longnan is one of the major Chinese herbal medicines and olive producing areas.
