Yinchuan is the capital of Ninxia Hui Autonomous region and former capital of the Western Xia Empire of the Tanguts. Yinchuan in Chinese means “Silver Plain”. Because The founders of Western Xia Empire called Tanguts, they are Qiang People originated from Tibet,Qinghai and Gansue area. They reverence Snow Mountains and prefer white color. Tanguts people would like to call themselves “supreme white kingdom”. While silver was usually connected to white, just like that of gold was connected to yellow. Silver and gold represent wealth and nobleness. Therefore the land occupied by their ancestors was called Yinchuan - “Silver Plain”.
The city that has a history of more than 1,300 years was originally founded in 678. It was called Western Xia from the establishment in 1038 by the leader of Dangxiang ethnic group and had created splendid culture as well as gorgeous architecture.
Yinchuan is a multi-nationality city including Han, Hui, Manchu, Mongolian, andChaoxian peoples. Among them, the Hui people account for 26.3 percent of the total population and they have maintained the traditional folk customs and life style that are unique to other ethnic group.
Yinchuan lies in the middle of the Yinchuan or Ningxia Plain. It is sheltered from the deserts of Mongolia by the high ranges of the Helan Mountains to its west. The Yellow River runs through Yinchuan from southwest to northeast. The average elevation of Yinchuan is 1,100 meters (about 3,608 feet). The urban center of Yinchuan lies about halfway between the Yellow River and the edge of Helan Mountains.
Yinchuan is the Military, political, economic, business and cultural center of the region. Its main industry is textile manufacturing and production of Chinese wolfberry, wheat, apple, rice, and wine.
Thanks to the Yellow River, Yinchuan enjoys beautiful natural scenery and favorable conditions for agriculture and has long earned the fame of a "River Side City in the Northwest" and "Home to Fishes and Rice". In 2010, Yinchuan is officially assignment as the site for China-Arab States Cooperation Forum. It provides great opportunities for Yinchuan to develop as the business center for China and Arab States. In the national level, Yinchuan has been holding various events such as China-Arab States Expo, to function as a business bridge between China and Arab States.
A transportation system of highway, railway and airlines in Yinchuan provides speed and convenience. There are several national highways leading to all parts of the country and more than 125 kilometers (about 78 miles) of expressways within the boundaries of the city. Baolan Railway (Baotou in Inner Mongolia to Lanzhou in Gansu) and Zhongbao Railway (Zhongwei in Ningxia to Baoji in Shaanxi) connect Yinchuan Railway Station with all railway lines to every destination. In addition, flights from Yinchuan Hedong Airport take you to all the major cities of China.
